Join Aaju Peter and Barbara Kraus for a conversation on the realities of living and travelling in the Canadian Arctic. As a traveller, the beauty of the vast landscape, the abundant wildlife, and the welcoming smiles in every community we visit are positively enchanting. We are transported, both literally and figuratively, to another world, a world carved by ice, anchored by rock, and populated by many animals and few humans. But we should also be reminded that this part of the world, so different from what most of us call home, is an integral part of Canada. As such, Ottawa makes decisions on how the people of the Arctic should live, regulates their livelihoods, imposes school curricula, controls subsidies, and calculates hunting quotas.

With the creation of the new territory of Nunavut in 1999, 23 years in the making, the Inuit of the region have taken…
