In honour of National Truth and Reconciliation Day, Abbey Gardens will be hosting a special “Meet & Greet” featuring rare Ojibwe Spirit Horses who live, and are cared for, at Abbey Gardens. Abbey Gardens is in the Haliburton Highlands, originally known as Ogidaaki or Gidaaki, on traditional lands of the Anishinaabe people and territory of the Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Nations, collectively known as the Williams Treaties First Nations.
From 11:00am-1:00pm on Tuesday September 30th, 2025, we are inviting our community to come and learn about these beautiful creatures and reflect upon their history and cultural significance to Indigenous Peoples. Children’s author Heather O’Connor will read “Across the Ice: How We Saved the Ojibwe Horse”, her brand-new picture book about the exciting rescue and heartwarming return of the Ojibwe Spirit Horse to Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation (Lac La Croix First Nation).
