JOYCE SUMARA

Joyce Sumara is a retired engineer and Chief Information Officer whose career combined technical expertise with executive leadership. After retiring, she rediscovered a lifelong passion for painting and has devoted herself to developing her artistic practice.

Working primarily in oils, Joyce creates expressive landscapes and wildlife paintings inspired by the natural beauty of Ontario’s Haliburton Highlands and Florida’s Gulf Coast. Her work has been exhibited in both Canada and Florida, and she enjoys sharing her art through exhibitions, open studio events, and community programs.

Joyce has studied extensively through workshops and classes at the Haliburton School of Art + Design and continues to paint regularly at Harvey Walker’s Boathouse Studio in Carnarvon. She believes art has the power to connect people, preserve the beauty of the places we love, and inspire a deeper appreciation of the natural world.

A seasonal resident of Kennisis Lake and a permanent resident of Venice, Florida, Joyce brings significant governance experience to the Arts Council. She has previously served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including the Canada Revenue Agency, MedicAlert Canada, and Grandview Children’s Centre. She is committed to supporting the Arts Council’s mission of fostering a vibrant arts community throughout Haliburton County.
