Arts Honours Gala Back …. With An Edge
Wednesday February 17, 2010www.haliburtonarts.on.ca
The Gala is Back for its Fourth Year with a Dark and Edgy Theme
The Arts Council ~ Haliburton Highlands is thrilled to be hosting the Annual Arts Honours Gala for a fourth year. The popular event, taking place on Saturday, May 1 at the Haliburton Legion, is again celebrating the arts, its supporters and the achievements of our incredibly talented local artists. As in previous years honours presentations will be made to the top nominees in five categories: Youth Artist; Emerging Artist; Arts Supporter; Founder; Artist of Distinction.
Choosing a theme for an arts gala is always a creative challenge. How do you keep it current, relate it to the arts and keep the feeling celebratory? This year the Gala organizers wanted to embrace a “green” aesthetic with emphasis on recycling, repurposing and reuse but at the same time create something less cliché, more contemporary and more than a little edgy. They started by imagining a near future, post-apocalyptic world where in order to create something new one must repurpose, a world where the only choice is clever use of found materials. Is ‘After the Apocalypse' a little dark for a celebration of the arts? Perhaps, but with the emphasis on creativity, the art of something from nothing, and a fresh approach the committee is confident it will be sleek and sexy as well.
Also new this year is the après-show entertainment. Featuring a bluesy mix of classic and original material Haliburton's own Ragged Company invites attendees to dance the night away.
In addition to honouring and celebrating artists, the Gala will again take on a fundraising role. Even as demand for vital Arts Council programs like Artists-in-the-Schools and Visible Voices grows, funding has become increasingly difficult to secure. To help fill the gap the Gala organizers are focusing their fundraising efforts on sponsorship. Chris Lynd, Celebrations Committee chair explains, “with a goal of $2,500 we are hoping individuals and businesses will recognize the value of the arts to the entire community and offer their support as Gala sponsors.” This year the Gala will also feature a “Mystery Artist” fundraising game. Details will be released when plans are finalized but it promises to be lots of fun. Every extra penny raised will support the ongoing work of the Arts Council.
According to Andy Campbell, Executive Director of the HCDC, “The Arts Honours Gala is an important way to recognize and honour the contributions of our area artists, arts organizations and businesses, and supporters. They are vital to the economic health, vibrancy and vitality of the entire Haliburton Highlands community. In addition to honouring these individuals and groups the Gala is also an event where business and the arts have the opportunity to connect.”
Last year tickets to the event sold out early. To reserve tickets or to inquire about sponsoring the event please contact the Arts Council office at 705-457-8033.

Opportunity for Artists with Cottage Dreams
Thursday February 18, 2010www.cottagedreams.org
Cottage Dreams Cancer Recovery Initiative has 4 paddles and 1 Muskoka chair that they need painted by one of Haliburton County's artists to feature at an online eBay auction in March and on display during the 2010 Spring Cottage Life Show in Toronto.
This will be the 2nd such auction in partnership with the amazing folks at Cottage Life. They donate prime space at the Dockside pavilion (where they give out free beer/Caesar samples) to showcase the original pieces to the attendees.
The unfinished items are located in the Village Barn office (Haliburton) and in return for your talent, time and generosity, they will include your weblink and bio on the webpage they are designing that will be at www.cottagedreams.org as well as promoted by the online Cottage Life magazine Dockside as well as in Editor Penny Caldwell's blog and on signage at your original work of art at the CL Show.
There will be 33,000 visitors to the show and with the Cottage Dreams booth being placed right beside the Dockside pavilion to explain and encourage bidding via eBay. Cottage Dreams will be promoting the auction and artists all weekend at their booth as well as at the chair display. The chairs will be available through eBay only, so you will also receive views from those who could not attend the show. Last year, 6 original chairs were sold for over $7,000 via eBay.
The medium used will be paint but last year a couple of artists enhanced their vision by adding small, secure designs in a second medium but the paint only are best for this... but Cottage Dreams is open to suggestions.
In addition, Cottage Dreams will give a $75 stipend for materials and offer a tax receipt.
Cottage Dreams thanks you and hopes this provides you with a great opportunity to promote your work and support the placing of 300+ families into cottages this year.
For more information call 705-457-9100 (in Haliburton) or 416-763-2009 (in Toronto).
Arts Honours Gala 2010: 'Mystery Artist' Call for Submissions

'Mystery Artist' Call for Submissions
After the Apocalypse ~ The Phoenix Rises
Choosing a theme for an arts gala is always a creative challenge. How do you keep it current, relate it to the arts and keep the feeling celebratory?
This year the Celebrations Committee wanted to embrace a "green" aesthetic with emphasis on recycling, repurposing and reuse but at the same time create something less cliché, more contemporary and more than a little edgy. We started by imagining a near future, post-apocalyptic world where in order to create something new one must repurpose. A world where the only choice is clever use of found materials. A little dark for a celebration of the arts? Perhaps, but with the emphasis on creativity, the art of something from nothing and a fresh approach, we are confident it will be sleek and sexy as well.
This year we are encouraging community members, artists and non-artists alike, to engage their creativity and help us celebrate the achievements of our arts community in style. Keeping the Gala theme in mind we invite you to create an art piece for our 'Mystery Artist' fundraising game. The piece should be suitable for hanging and based on an 8" x 10" canvas we will supply. Your art piece can, but does not have to be a traditional 2D rendering. If collages, assemblages, 3D or bas-relief work inspire you, we welcome that expression of your creativity. Paper folding or sculpture, yarn painting, mosaics, quilting or concrete castings more your sort of thing? Keep our theme in mind and go for it! Anything goes but please be sure to sign your work on the back only.
Here's why:
The artwork produced will be displayed at the 4th annual Arts Council Honours Gala and will become an integral part of the evening's decor. The entry fee to play the Mystery Artist game is $50.00. For this fee each participant will be allowed to choose one (1) fabulous art piece to take home. If more than one person is interested in the same artwork they will be allowed to bid against each other for the privilege of ownership. Until each artwork comes off the wall no-one will know who the mystery artist is; whether the work is from one of our area's professional artists or that of a talented amateur or arts supporter.
All artist's contributions will be acknowledged at the Gala and in print. This game is a great way for someone to start or add to their collection of original art. All proceeds will help to support the ongoing work of the Arts Council.
This year's Arts Honours Gala will be held on May 1 at the Haliburton Legion. Stay tuned for full details.
If you are interested in submitting a piece, picking up a canvas or want more information, please call Mark at the Arts Council office at 705-457-8033 or email mark@haliburtonarts.on.ca
