Artists in the Schools Program

The Arts Council~Haliburton Highlands began the Artists in the Schools Program in 2004 and has been providing opportunities for children in elementary schools to learn from artists who live in their community. Sessions are offered by ceramic artists, puppeteers, actors, musicians, dancers, painters, sculptors, print-markers, percussionists, jewellery artists, storytellers, artist blacksmiths, glass blowers, and fabric artists.

As some children in Haliburton County have limited access to artistic experience, the Artists in the Schools program provides:

  • Interaction with local professional artists in the classroom;
  • Curriculum links between the arts and other school subjects;
  • Exposure to various careers in the arts and arts related businesses;
  • Connections between the community and its schools; and
  • New arts experiences for children and teachers.

The classroom teacher matches an artist to their students' interests and the curriculum. Classes in the program participate in six 100 minute sessions with various artists which give students an opportunity to learn new techniques, use tools, work with different materials and encourages them to express themselves creatively.

In  the 2013 -2014 school year, 22 classrooms in all 5 elementary schools in the county will participate in the Artists in the Schools program. Each classroom receives four 100-minute art sessions. Twelve local professional artists are registered in the program and will collectively provide curriculum based arts learning experiences in dance, drama, music and visual arts to over 500 students.

Here's what the children had to say:
This was the most fun I had all year!"
"I'm going to be a potter when I grow up."
"Me and My friends are going to start our own puppet shows and make lots of money."
"I'm not very good at math or reading, but I like that I'm good at this."

Here's what the teachers had to say:
"It's great to see the students connecting with artists in the communities and learning about the strong artist influence in the area."
"I strongly valued having several areas of my curriculum covered through the art projects."
"The students had an opportunity to experience some art activities that I would not have been comfortable implementing myself due to lack of experience."

The Arts Council works in partnership with Point in Time Centre for Children, Youth and Parents to make arts experiences available to children in Haliburton County.
